Canteleu sits just west of Rouen, on the right bank of the Seine where the river loops through its broad Normandy meanders. On a map the town spreads over a steep slope. At the bottom are the riverside hamlets and quays along the water. On the plateau above are residential neighbourhoods and large housing estates, and to the north lies the Forêt de Roumare.
The riverside hamlet of Croisset belongs to Canteleu. Gustave Flaubert lived there and wrote Madame Bovary in his family house by the Seine, and a small pavilion from the property survives as a museum. From the heights of the town, there are wide views over the river valley and the port and city of Rouen.
