Ceglie Messapica sits on a rise in the Apulian countryside between Brindisi and the Valle d'Itria. From above, its oldest quarter is a dense knot of short, curving lanes packed around the high ground. Newer blocks spread out from it in looser, straighter lines. Past the last houses, roads thin into country lanes that cross a patchwork of olive groves, dry-stone walls and scattered farmhouses.
The town's name keeps its roots in the Messapians, the people who lived in this part of southern Italy before Rome. A ducal castle still stands at the heart of the historic centre. Ceglie is also known across Apulia for its food, especially the biscotto cegliese, a local almond biscuit. On paper, though, the town is told through its geometry: a tight core and a wide, quiet hinterland.
