Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of Africa, bordering Morocco and facing the Strait of Gibraltar. Its outline is among the most distinctive on any map. A slender isthmus with water on both sides widens at its eastern end into the hilly peninsula of Monte Hacho, which is topped by an old fortress.
The old centre occupies the isthmus itself, with streets pressed between the port on the northern bay and the southern shore. At the landward end stand the Royal Walls, cut through by a moat that boats can pass, so the centre is technically separated from the mainland by water. Newer districts spread west over the hills toward the Moroccan border.

The harbour breakwaters, the curve of the bays and the steep contours of Monte Hacho frame a dense urban core, and the whole composition reads like a coastal chart. At the western end of the old town, the Royal Walls and the San Felipe moat cut across the isthmus, a short straight channel linking the two shores.
Monte Hacho
The rounded peninsula at the eastern tip rises steeply from the sea. Its winding roads and fortress give the end of the map a strong, compact form.
