Cheshunt lies in the Borough of Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, just north of the edge of Greater London. From above, the town sits between two strong lines: the A10 to the west and the Lee Valley to the east. There, the River Lea, reservoirs, lakes and old gravel pits form a long band of water and green space.
The eastern side of the Lea Valley was once covered with glasshouse nurseries, and Cheshunt was closely tied to that trade. Tesco had its head office here for many years. To the west, the remains of Theobalds Palace, a favourite residence of James I, lie among later housing and parkland.
A Cheshunt map poster is shaped by that contrast. The residential streets form curved closes and cul-de-sacs, and the railway runs along the valley. East of the line, the lakes of the River Lee Country Park open up into wide water shapes. The result is a suburban plan with a strong natural edge.

Postwar and later housing estates form curved roads and cul-de-sacs. Their loops give the western half of the poster a soft, repeated rhythm.
