Chūru stands in northern Rajasthan, where the farmland of Shekhawati gives way to the sandy expanses of the Thar Desert. On the map, the town is a dense, rounded cluster of lanes with little sprawl and open land on every side. Roads leave the centre in several directions like spokes, crossing an otherwise empty landscape toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The town is known for its merchant havelis. These large courtyard houses, with painted walls and carved balconies, were built by trading families who made their fortunes elsewhere. Their inward-facing courtyards help explain the texture of the old quarter, with narrow streets and closed blocks instead of wide avenues. Chūru is also known for extreme weather and often records some of India's hottest summer and coldest winter temperatures.
