Codajás lies on the Solimões, the name given to the upper Amazon in Brazil, in the state of Amazonas, west of Manaus. Like most towns along the river, it is reached mainly by boat, and its layout is defined by water. Lakes and side channels surround the settlement, and the river's level rises and falls dramatically through the year.
The town is widely known in Amazonas for açaí, and it celebrates the fruit with an annual festival. On the map, the urban area is small and compact, a short grid of streets set on the higher ground by the riverbank, with dense forest and water pressing in from almost every side.
