Contramaestre Map Poster & Print
Contramaestre lies in the interior of Santiago de Cuba province, in the rolling farmland of eastern Cuba. The town takes its name from the Contramaestre river, which flows past it and shows on the map as a winding line through the valley. The main highway across the east of the island passes through the town, and so does the railway.
The street plan is typical of Cuban provincial towns: a fairly regular grid of blocks around a central area, gradually loosening toward the edges where houses give way to fields. The surrounding countryside has traditionally been devoted to sugar cane and other crops, and roads fan out from the town to the smaller settlements around it.
A Contramaestre map poster is an honest portrait of a working town. The grid, the river and the highway through the middle together make a simple, well-balanced image. For people with roots here, it is a way to hold a very specific part of Oriente.

Carretera Central
Cuba's main east–west highway runs through the town. On the map it is the dominant straight line, linking Contramaestre to Bayamo and Santiago.
Provincial grid
The town centre follows a steady pattern of square blocks. It gradually breaks up at the edges into rural roads leading out to farms and villages.
