Corupá lies in the north of Santa Catarina, in a valley between the coastal lowlands and the plateau. The town follows the river, and from above its streets stretch along the valley floor with steep, forested slopes rising on both sides. The layout is shaped by water and terrain rather than by a planned grid, so the roads bend with the valley.
The area was settled largely by German immigrants in the late nineteenth century, and their influence remains in local architecture and festivals. Today Corupá is known for banana growing on the surrounding slopes and for the Rota das Cachoeiras, a trail through Atlantic Forest that passes a long series of waterfalls.
