Crixás sits in the interior of Goiás, far from the coast, in the savanna country Brazilians call the cerrado. From above, the town is a small, tight block of streets surrounded by wide open land. Rural roads leave the edge of town and cross farmland and pasture, and they become fainter the further out they run.
The town's name goes back to the gold rushes that pulled settlers into central Brazil in the eighteenth century. Mining still shapes the local economy today. A map doesn't show any of that directly. What it records is how a settlement founded on prospecting became an ordinary grid of residential blocks, a central square and roads heading out to the countryside.
A Crixás map poster keeps the town at a scale where its limits are easy to read. Dense lines gather at the centre and then spread thin. Watercourses cut through the surrounding land on their way north toward the larger rivers of the Araguaia basin. It is a quiet, inland composition with plenty of empty space around it.
