Dachang sits in Wushan County in the far east of Chongqing, where the Daning River winds through limestone mountains before joining the Yangtze. From above, the town is shaped by the terrain more than by any plan. Built-up blocks hold to the flatter ground along the water, and roads climb and switch back into the surrounding hills like contour lines.
The reservoir that rose behind the Three Gorges Dam changed this stretch of valley. The old walled town of Dachang was taken down and rebuilt on higher ground. On a map, two layers of history fit into one small frame: a broad, calm body of water and a compact settlement arranged around it.
A Dachang map poster reduces all of this to line and shape. Without the green of the slopes, three things remain: the path of the river, the tight knot of streets on its bank and the thin roads that lead out towards the gorges. They are printed in clean black on white.

On flat ground the streets form short, dense blocks. Elsewhere they bend to follow the slope, and the irregular loops show the terrain without any shading.

A few thin routes leave the town along the valley floor, tracing the way towards the Little Three Gorges and the wider county beyond.
