Eastbourne Map Poster & Print
Eastbourne lines the English Channel in East Sussex, below the South Downs. From above, the seafront is the key feature: a long, gently curving promenade backed by wide parallel streets. To the west the land rises onto the Downs towards Beachy Head, and to the east the town ends at Sovereign Harbour's marina basins.
Much of the central town was laid out in the nineteenth century under the Dukes of Devonshire. It was planned as a genteel resort, with broad tree-lined roads, and shops kept back from the seafront. The pier, the bandstand and the Grand Parade still reflect that design, and the town hosts a well-known grass-court tennis tournament each June.
An Eastbourne map poster shows planning and landscape meeting at the coast. The regular Victorian streets fill the middle of the sheet, and the open chalk downland is almost blank to the west. The coastline pulls it all together in one long, elegant line.

Devonshire grid
Behind the seafront, broad planned avenues form a calm, ordered pattern. It is quite different from the tight lanes of older English coastal towns.
Downs and harbour
Open chalk hills rise at the western edge and marina basins close off the east. Together they frame the town between natural and engineered landscapes.
