Farrukhābād lies near the Ganges in western Uttar Pradesh, and together with neighbouring Fatehgarh it forms a twin city. The map shows two quite different textures: the old town with its dense, winding lanes and bazaars, and the cantonment side with a more open, regular layout. The river runs to the east, broad and braided, with sandbanks that shift with the seasons.
The city was founded in the early eighteenth century by the Nawab Muhammad Khan Bangash and named after the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar. It has long been known for hand block printing on textiles, a craft still practised in local workshops, and Fatehgarh is home to army regimental centres.
