Ferdows lies in South Khorasan, in eastern Iran, on a plain between desert basins and arid mountain ranges. From above, the town is a patch of streets and gardens in a wide dry landscape. Roads run out across open ground, and green areas mark where water has been brought to the surface. Historically the town was known as Tun and was a stop on routes across the Iranian plateau.
In 1968 a series of powerful earthquakes struck the region and badly damaged the old town. Much of Ferdows was rebuilt afterwards, which is why its map includes more regular, planned blocks next to older, less even fabric. The contrast is easy to see from above: straighter streets in the newer quarters, and irregular lanes where older patterns survive.

Dry, open land surrounds the town on all sides. Roads cross it in long straight lines, and the built-up area stands out as a compact island.
Gardens and water
Irrigated gardens and farmland cluster near the town. They mark the places where water supports settlement in an otherwise arid region.
