Des Moines River
The river runs through the heart of the city in a wooded valley. It divides the street grid into two halves, and the bridges become key links on the map.

Fort Dodge Map Poster & Print
Fort Dodge grew up on the Des Moines River in north-central Iowa, on the site of an army post founded in 1850. The river cuts a valley through the city from north to south. Its steep, wooded banks and side ravines interrupt the grid that covers the upland on either side, and several bridges tie the east and west neighbourhoods together.
The area is well known for gypsum. Deposits around the city have been quarried and processed for a long time, and they famously supplied the block carved into the Cardiff Giant, the nineteenth-century hoax. Fort Dodge is the county seat of Webster County, and its downtown sits close to the river on the higher ground.
A Fort Dodge map poster shows a city shaped by its valley. In black and white, the river corridor reads as a band of open space through the middle. Streets stop at the bluffs, and the curving roads that climb out of the ravines stand out against the straight blocks above.

Bluffs and ravines
Side valleys cut into the upland and break the grid into irregular pieces. Roads wind down their slopes, a sharp contrast with the straight residential streets above.
Gypsum country
Quarries and works around the city reflect its long association with gypsum. On a wider view, they appear as large open shapes at the edge of town.
