Galliate sits on the flat farmland east of Novara, close to where Piedmont gives way to Lombardy across the Ticino. From above, the town reads as a dense, roughly rounded centre with streets pulling outward toward neighbouring villages. Around it lies a patchwork of fields and straight irrigation channels that is typical of this corner of the Po plain.
At the heart of the old town stands the Visconti-Sforza castle, a large square fortress with corner towers that still anchors the street pattern around it. The lanes nearby are narrow and slightly irregular, while later neighbourhoods follow a looser, more rectilinear layout. On a map the contrast between the tight historic core and the open grid around it is easy to follow.
To the east, the land drops toward the wooded banks of the Ticino, part of a protected river park shared with Lombardy.
