Gatchina lies about forty-five kilometres south of Saint Petersburg, and its map is dominated by the grounds of the Great Gatchina Palace. The palace was built for Count Grigory Orlov and later became the residence of Emperor Paul I. Its park takes up a large part of the town, with lakes, islands and winding paths laid out in the English landscape style.
The White Lake and Silver Lake form irregular, open shapes within the park, with bridges and small pavilions scattered around the shores. Next to the parkland, the town's streets run in a more regular grid, laid out in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and railway lines cross through the town towards Saint Petersburg.
