Gent grew where the Leie flows into the Scheldt, and the water still organises the map. Arms of river and canal wind through the centre, splitting it into islands and quays, while later cuts and docks push north toward the port. Around it all, the R40 ring road draws a rough loop that marks the edge of the historic city.
Inside that loop are the Graslei and Korenlei, two facing quays of guild houses, the Gravensteen castle, the belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral, which holds the Van Eyck brothers' Ghent Altarpiece. In the Middle Ages the cloth trade made Gent one of the largest cities north of the Alps, and the density of the old street plan still reflects that.
A Gent map poster captures the contrast between the tangle of the centre and the long straight lines of the canal that runs north to Terneuzen and the sea. The city is also a large university town, and student districts, parks and the Blaarmeersen recreation lake fill the south and west with open shapes.
