Gera sits in the valley of the White Elster in eastern Thuringia, and from above the river is the city's spine. It runs roughly north to south, with the old town on its western bank and neighbourhoods climbing the slopes on either side. Large post-war housing estates form distinct geometric patches on the higher ground, in clear contrast to the tighter, irregular streets of the historic centre.
Gera is one of the largest cities in Thuringia and was long a centre of textile production. It is the birthplace of the painter Otto Dix, whose childhood home is now a museum. In 2007 the city co-hosted the federal garden show, which reshaped the riverside meadows near the centre into a large open park.
A Gera map poster shows how strongly a river valley can organise a city. The Elster floodplain forms a green corridor through the middle, and wooded hills close off the edges. The street network gets denser near the old market square and looser as it climbs away from the water.
