High Wycombe fills the narrow valley of the River Wye, and the map makes this plain. A long east–west band of roads runs along the valley floor, and residential streets climb the chalk slopes to the north and south. The town centre sits in the middle of this corridor, where old routes meet before the river turns south toward the Thames.
For centuries the town was known for making chairs from beech felled in the surrounding Chiltern woods, and furniture shaped both its economy and its reputation. Another tradition still continues: the mayor is publicly weighed, a custom meant to show whether the office holder has grown fat at the taxpayers' expense.

Chiltern slopes
Residential streets climb steeply out of the valley on both sides, follow the contours and branch into smaller side valleys. This gives the edges of the map a rib-like pattern.
M40 line
The motorway passes along the southern side of the town. Its smooth, heavy curve contrasts with the tighter, older street pattern down in the valley.
