The flooded crater
The centre of the island is a circular basin of seawater inside the old volcanic cone. It is the defining feature of the design, a round bay held within a ring of land.

Île Saint-Paul Map Poster & Print
Île Saint-Paul is a small, uninhabited volcanic island in the southern Indian Ocean, part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It covers only a few square kilometres and lies far from any continent. Its nearest neighbour, Île Amsterdam, is some distance to the north. There are no streets to draw, so its map is almost entirely coastline and contour.
The island is the exposed rim of a volcano. On its eastern side the sea has broken through the crater wall and turned the caldera into a nearly circular natural harbour. A narrow gap connects it to the ocean. Steep cliffs surround the basin, and the outer coast is sheer and open to the westerly winds of the far south.
An Île Saint-Paul map poster is closer to a drawing than a street plan: a thick crescent of land wrapped around a round, sheltered bay. Its simplicity is the appeal. For anyone interested in remote islands, volcanoes or the southern ocean, it is one of the purest shapes on the map.

The breached rim
A narrow opening on the eastern side connects the crater to the ocean. On the poster it appears as a small break in the ring, which gives the whole island its horseshoe outline.
Outer cliffs
Outside the crater, the island drops steeply into the sea on every side. The outer coastline is smooth and compact, with no settlements, roads or harbours to break it.
