Ipaba sits in the eastern part of Minas Gerais, close to the steel towns of the Vale do Aço. From above, it looks like many interior Brazilian municipalities: a tight urban core of short blocks, a few longer roads leading out of town, and green hills folding around it. The town's edge is sharp. Streets end and farmland begins almost at once.
The land around Ipaba belongs to the wider Rio Doce basin. Streams run down between low ridges, and dirt roads follow the contours to scattered farms. On a map, those roads show up as thin, winding threads against a mostly empty background. That contrast between the dense centre and the open countryside gives the town its quiet visual rhythm.
