Irbit lies in the east of Sverdlovsk Oblast, where the Urals flatten into the West Siberian Plain. The town stands on the Irbit River close to where it joins the Nitsa, and water shapes much of the map. Meandering channels, oxbow bends and floodplain meadows wrap around a centre laid out in regular blocks, so each frame mixes straight lines with loops.
In the nineteenth century Irbit hosted one of the largest trade fairs in the Russian Empire. It was held every winter and drew merchants from both Europe and Asia. The trading rows and wide streets of that period still set the pattern of the centre. In the twentieth century the town became known for its motorcycle factory, which produced the Ural sidecar motorcycles.
