Ixtepec lies on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, the narrowest part of southern Mexico between the Gulf and the Pacific. The land here is broad and low, so the town spreads out in a regular grid with few natural obstacles. On the map, rail lines are the strongest feature, cutting through the urban area and heading off across the plain.
The town has long been tied to the railway across the isthmus. In recent years it has become known as a stop for migrants travelling north on freight trains, and as the home of a migrant shelter founded by the priest Alejandro Solalinde. The area is also Zapotec country, and local traditions remain strong here.
