Palace by the river
Jelgava Palace and its grounds occupy a large rectangular site on the riverbank. It is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map and a natural centre for the composition.

Jelgava Map Poster & Print
Jelgava lies on the Lielupe River in central Latvia, south-west of Riga, in a wide and very flat farming plain. From above, the city is built around the river. The Lielupe and its side channel, the Driksa, enclose an island next to the centre, and the city's streets spread out in a fairly regular grid on the surrounding land.
Jelgava, historically known as Mitau, was the capital of the Duchy of Courland. Its best-known landmark, Jelgava Palace, was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect of St Petersburg's Winter Palace. Today it houses the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. On the map, its large rectangular grounds sit right next to the water.
A Jelgava map poster shows a city shaped by its river and its ducal past. The palace, the island and the bridges form a strong focal point, while the grid of blocks and the roads leading to Riga and the Lithuanian border give the design structure and a sense of scale.

Lielupe and Driksa
The main river and its side channel split around an island next to the city centre. Their paired curves give the poster a flowing, distinctive heart.
Regular city grid
Away from the river, the streets settle into a mostly rectangular pattern. It is calm and legible, a quiet backdrop for the waterways and bridges.
