Granite hill
The rocky outcrop dominates the centre of the composition. Streets stop at its base, leaving an open shape that reads clearly in black and white.

Kalugumalai Map Poster & Print
Kalugumalai is a town in Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu, built at the base of a single rocky hill that rises from the surrounding plain. The hill is the defining feature of the map: streets and houses cluster around its lower slopes, while its summit and steep sides remain open ground. Around the town, farmland spreads across flat, dry country.
The hill is known for the Vettuvan Koil, an unfinished rock-cut temple carved downward into the granite in the eighth century under the Pandya dynasty, and for a large group of Jain relief sculptures cut into the rock face. These monuments make Kalugumalai one of the notable archaeological sites of the far south, even though the town itself is small.
Below the hill, a temple and its surrounding streets form the centre, with lanes running out towards fields and neighbouring villages. A Kalugumalai map poster shows the way the settlement bends around the rock, a distinctive outline that makes this map immediately different from the gridded towns of the plain.

Vettuvan Koil
The monolithic rock-cut temple, carved in the Pandya period, sits on the hillside. It is small on the map but central to the town's reputation.
Encircling streets
Lanes and house rows curve around the lower slopes, so the town's plan follows the contour of the hill instead of a straight grid.
