Kanggye Map Poster & Print
Kanggye is the capital of Chagang Province in the mountainous north of North Korea. On a map, the landscape defines everything. The city is set in a valley where rivers meet, surrounded by steep, wooded slopes. The built-up area follows the flat valley floor and stretches along the water.
Because the terrain leaves so little flat ground, the city is long and narrow, not spread out. Streets run parallel to the rivers, and roads and a railway follow the valleys in and out of the city. Outside the centre, the pattern quickly thins to scattered buildings and the contours of the hills.
A Kanggye map poster captures a city shaped almost entirely by its topography. The river lines, the narrow band of streets and the surrounding high ground make a restrained, precise composition. It is an unusual subject, most meaningful to those with a real connection to the region.

Mountain setting
Steep, forested mountains surround the city on all sides. They hold the urban area in a narrow band along the valley floor.
Linear layout
With little flat land, the streets stretch along the rivers rather than spreading out. On the map the city looks like a long, narrow ribbon.
