Fox River crossing
The river divides the city in two. Its bridges are where the two street grids meet, which gives the map a clear central axis.

Kaukauna Map Poster & Print
Kaukauna lies on the Lower Fox River in northeastern Wisconsin, between Appleton and Green Bay. The river runs through the middle of the city from southwest to northeast. On the map it splits the town into two halves joined by several bridges. Residential streets on each bank are set out in a largely rectilinear pattern, which bends where it meets the water.
The name comes from a word for a portage around rapids at this point. Engineers later tamed the drop with a series of navigation locks and a canal along the river. For a long time Kaukauna has been an industrial town, and paper mills and hydroelectric works have used the river's power. Traces of the canal and locks still show clearly on the map.
A Kaukauna map poster pairs natural and engineered water. There is the broad channel of the Fox itself, and beside it the straight line of the canal and a string of locks. Around them, quiet street grids spread out on both banks, and parkland and green space follow the river's edges.

Locks and canal
A historic canal with navigation locks runs beside the river where it once dropped over rapids. Its straight line stands out against the natural curve of the Fox.
Riverside mill sites
Large industrial parcels line the river where paper mills and power works were built. They appear as big, simple shapes along the water.
