Lady Frere lies in the rural interior of the Eastern Cape, in hilly country north of Komani. From above, the town is a small, fairly regular cluster of streets. Around it the land opens into grassland, gentle ridges and dry stream beds, with the settlement pattern thinning out to homesteads connected by tracks.
The town is generally said to take its name from the wife of Sir Bartle Frere, a nineteenth-century governor of the Cape Colony. It has long served as an administrative and trading centre for the surrounding villages, and its main roads lead out across the hills in several directions.
