Old town lanes
A fine mesh of alleys too narrow for cars prints as a dark, intricate texture. It is one of the densest street patterns on the East African coast.

Lamu Map Poster & Print
Lamu sits on the island of the same name in the Lamu Archipelago, off Kenya's northern coast. From above, the old town is a tight mass of buildings along a sheltered channel. Its lanes are so narrow that the map shows fine threads rather than streets. Behind the town the built area thins out into sand and scrub, and the mangrove-edged shoreline curves away on both sides.
Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often described as the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa. Coral-stone houses, carved doors and mosques line lanes that were laid out for people and donkeys, not cars. The waterfront promenade is the one wide, straight line in a town that otherwise turns inward.
A Lamu map poster keeps this contrast between the busy old town and the open water around it. The seafront is a clean edge along the channel. Inland, the lanes break the town into small irregular blocks. Further along the coast, smaller settlements and the paths linking them run out toward the dunes, and the islands of the archipelago fill the rest of the sheet.

The waterfront
A long, straight promenade faces the channel and marks where the dense town stops. It gives the composition a firm baseline along the water.
Archipelago waters
Channels, mangrove creeks and neighbouring islands surround Lamu. They add pale open space and soft, irregular coastlines around the settlement.

Neden Lamu
Anlam taşıyan bir harita
Lamu stays with people who have walked its lanes, taken a dhow across the channel or spent slow days on the coast. On paper, its unusual street pattern looks like a woodcut and is easy to recognise.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date of a visit. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand and Paper suit the coral-stone palette of the old town especially well.
