Landerneau sits in western Brittany, a short distance inland from Brest, at the point where the Élorn river meets the tide. Upstream the river is narrow and fresh; downstream it opens into a winding estuary that flows toward the Rade de Brest. From above, the town reads as two halves facing each other across the water.
Linking those halves is the Pont de Rohan, one of the few inhabited bridges still standing in Europe, its houses built right across the river since the sixteenth century. Landerneau is also known as the town where Édouard Leclerc opened his first shop, the beginning of the supermarket chain that carries his name.
Quays run along both banks, lanes climb gently away from the river, and newer districts spread into the Breton countryside of hedged fields. A Landerneau map poster shows the Élorn as a clear spine through the town, with the bridge marking the exact point where river and street meet.

Quays and older streets line both sides of the Élorn, so the town grows outward from the water in a balanced pattern north and south of the river.
