Lons-le-Saunier is the prefecture of the Jura department in eastern France. It sits in a basin where the plain of the Bresse meets the first slopes of the Jura mountains. The name recalls the salt springs that were worked here for centuries, and the town later became a spa. On a map, the historic centre forms a compact cluster at the foot of the hills.
The town's best known street is the Rue du Commerce, lined with long rows of arcades. Lons is also the birthplace of Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, author of La Marseillaise.
