The Sankuru River
The broad Sankuru sweeps past the town and takes up much of the frame. Its curves and sandbanks give the map a strong natural shape, very different from a landlocked grid.

Lusambo Map Poster & Print
Lusambo is shaped by the Sankuru River. The town lies along the water, and the river's broad curve dominates any map of the area. Streets run back from the bank in a modest pattern, and beyond the built-up area the roads quickly become long tracks crossing a landscape of forest and savanna. There is a lot of open space on the map, and the river holds it together.
The town is the capital of Sankuru province in central DR Congo. It is also one of the older administrative posts in the interior, founded during the Congo Free State period, when river transport was the main way to move across the region. The river is still central to how the town connects with the rest of the country.
A Lusambo map poster makes the river the main subject. It is drawn as a wide, flowing band beside the compact grid of the town. In black and white the balance of water, streets and empty land gives the poster a spare, calm composition.

Riverside town plan
The town's streets are laid out close to the bank, with the older administrative core near the water. The plan is simple and orderly, and it reads clearly against the river.
Roads into the interior
A few long roads leave town across the surrounding land. At poster scale they appear as thin lines running into wide open space, which shows how remote the town is.
