Two bays
Nagaev Bay and Gertner Bay frame the city on either side, so the poster shows Magadan as land wedged between two large areas of empty water, a strong and unusual silhouette.

Magadan Map Poster & Print
Magadan sits on Russia's Far Eastern coast, on the northern shore of the Sea of Okhotsk. The city occupies a strip of land between two inlets, Nagaev Bay to the southwest and Gertner Bay to the east, with hills rising behind it. From above, the coastline does much of the work: water presses in from two directions and the street network fills the ground between them.
Founded around 1930 as the base of the Dalstroy trust, Magadan became the gateway to the Kolyma gold fields and the Gulag camps of the region. The Kolyma Highway, often called the Road of Bones, begins here and heads inland. On a hill above the city stands the Mask of Sorrow, Ernst Neizvestny's memorial to the prisoners of the camps, unveiled in 1996.
A Magadan map poster shows a planned centre of broad, straight avenues laid out in the mid-twentieth century, softened at the edges by streets that climb into the hills and bend along the shore. The port on Nagaev Bay and the small Magadanka River add further detail. In black and white, the city reads as compact and self-contained, held between the sea and the slopes.

Planned central avenues
The core is organised around long, straight avenues and regular blocks from the Soviet period, which stand out clearly against the more irregular streets on the hillsides.
Start of the Kolyma road
The highway north into the interior leaves the city and heads into the hills, a single line on the map that connects Magadan to the vast Kolyma region beyond.

Neden Magadan
Anlam taşıyan bir harita
Magadan carries a heavy history and a remote, windswept setting, and people hang its map for many reasons: family ties to Kolyma, years spent working in the north, or a long journey along the Road of Bones. The map says a lot without needing any imagery.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a name, a date or a route. Five styles are available, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as $9 HD files in six print sizes or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
