Marignane lies north-west of Marseille, on the southern shore of the Étang de Berre, a large saltwater lagoon connected to the Mediterranean. The map is shaped by this water: a long shoreline to the north, the town centre set back from it, and the wide rectangles of the airport extending across flat land towards the lagoon.
Marseille Provence Airport occupies a large part of the commune, and its runways form the boldest straight lines on the map. Nearby stands the site of Airbus Helicopters, one of the main employers in the area and a major centre of helicopter manufacturing in Europe. Aviation and industry give this part of the map a scale quite unlike the older streets close by.
The historic centre is a small knot of narrow streets around the château of the Covet family, which now serves as the town hall.
