Planned block layout
The settlement is organised into regular sectors separated by straight tracks. This gives the map a geometric pattern that is very different from towns that grew organically.

Mbera Map Poster & Print
Mbera lies in the Hodh Ech Chargi region of far eastern Mauritania, not far from the town of Bassikounou and the border with Mali. It is known above all as the site of a large camp that has sheltered refugees from northern Mali since 2012. From above, the settlement looks nothing like an old town. It is laid out as a planned arrangement of blocks and tracks, set out across dry, open ground.
That planning is the most striking thing on a map. Rows of plots and service areas follow straight lines, broken only by wider tracks for water, supplies and movement. Beyond the edge, the Sahel stretches away in sand and sparse vegetation, with few roads and no rivers to interrupt it. The contrast between human order and empty land is stark.
An Mbera map poster is a document of a community that many people have called home for more than a decade. The regular geometry prints cleanly at every size, and the empty land around it gives the composition space to breathe. For aid workers, researchers and former residents, it is a precise record of a place that rarely appears in atlases in such detail.

Open Sahel
On every side the ground is flat and dry, with almost no built features. The settlement's edge is sharp and clearly defined.
Tracks to Bassikounou
A few roads and tracks link the site to the nearby town and the wider region. They thread thin lines across otherwise empty land.
