Misawa lies in eastern Aomori Prefecture, at the northern end of Honshu. On the map, the Pacific shoreline forms a long, nearly straight edge to the east, and Lake Ogawara spreads to the northwest. Between them are the city's grid of streets, farmland and the broad rectangle of Misawa Air Base, which is shared by Japanese and United States forces.
The airfield dominates the plan. Its runways are the longest straight lines in the area, and the base and the town have grown up around each other. Misawa also holds a place in aviation history. In 1931 the aircraft Miss Veedol took off from Sabishiro Beach here and completed the first nonstop flight across the Pacific.
