Montargis Map Poster & Print
Montargis is often called the Venice of the Gâtinais, and its map shows why. The Loing river passes through the town, the Briare canal ends here and the Loing canal begins. Narrow channels run through the old town and divide it into small blocks of houses and gardens. From above, water and streets run side by side, crossed again and again by short bridges.
Above the lower town, a hill carries what remains of the château of Montargis, once a royal residence, with medieval streets spreading down toward the water. The old centre curves, while the canals, built for barge traffic between the Loire and the Seine, run in straighter lines. Together they give the plan an unusual layered quality.
The town is also known as the birthplace of the praline, the caramelised almond said to have been created here in the seventeenth century by the cook of the Duke of Plessis-Praslin. Many small bridges
Dozens of footbridges and road bridges cross the channels. They turn the centre into a fine web of short crossings that gives the map much of its texture.
Château hill
The rising ground of the former royal château sits above the lower town. Its grounds and approach streets form a distinct, rounder shape against the straight canals below.
