Montélimar lies in the Rhône valley in the Drôme, a short distance east of the river itself. On a map its historic centre is easy to find. It is a nearly round cluster of narrow streets enclosed by a ring of wider boulevards that follows the line of the old defences. Newer districts spread out from that ring across the flat valley floor.
The Roubion and the Jabron meet near the town, and their courses cut across the southern and western edges of the map. To the east, the medieval Château des Adhémar stands on raised ground above the centre. For most travellers, though, the town means nougat, the almond and honey sweet that has been linked with Montélimar for generations.
