Irrigated field grid
The Vegas Bajas irrigation scheme divides the land around Montijo into long, regular plots and straight channels, a geometric texture that fills much of the surrounding map.

Montijo Map Poster & Print
Montijo lies in the province of Badajoz, in the Vegas Bajas del Guadiana, the broad irrigated lowland that follows the river between Mérida and Badajoz. On a map the town appears as a fairly compact core of streets surrounded on almost every side by agricultural land, where irrigation channels and field boundaries draw long straight lines across the flat valley floor.
The Guadiana itself runs to the south of the town, a wider and softer line than the man-made grid of canals and farm tracks around it. Roads leave the centre in several directions toward neighbouring towns of the Vegas Bajas, and the contrast between the dense, irregular old streets and the geometric fields beyond is what gives the plan its character.
A Montijo map poster suits anyone who knows this part of Extremadura, where towns are defined as much by the land that surrounds them as by their own streets. In black and white, the fields become a fine pattern of rectangles, the river curves quietly to one side, and the town sits in the middle as a small, dense cluster.

Guadiana to the south
The river passes south of the town across the open plain, providing a natural curve that balances the straight lines of the agricultural landscape.
Compact town core
The centre forms a tight, irregular knot of streets that stands out clearly against the open farmland, with roads radiating outward toward neighbouring towns.
