Looping street pattern
Instead of a straight grid, the township's roads bend in wide curves and crescents across the slopes, creating a dense, repeating texture that reads almost like a fingerprint in black and white.

Mpophomeni Map Poster & Print
Mpophomeni lies in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, near Howick and close to the shores of Midmar Dam. From above, it is recognisably a planned township: rows of small plots arranged along streets that loop and curve over the gentle hills, forming a pattern of repeated cells quite different from the farmland and open grassland around it.
The township has a significant place in regional history. It was established during the apartheid era, and many of its residents worked in the factories of nearby Howick; the community is remembered in particular for its role in the labour struggles of the mid-1980s. Today its streets carry that history alongside ordinary daily life, schools, churches and small shops.
A Mpophomeni map poster translates the settlement into fine, dense linework. The looping streets pack tightly together, while the edges open out into the empty space of the Midlands countryside and, nearby, the broad outline of the dam. It is a map with a strong graphic rhythm, and for people from Mpophomeni it is simply home, drawn clearly.

Midmar Dam nearby
The large reservoir of Midmar Dam lies close to the township. Where it enters the frame, its smooth shoreline offers a calm counterweight to the busy street network.
Midlands edges
Beyond the last streets, the rolling farmland and grassland of the Midlands leave open space around the settlement, so the built-up area stands out as a distinct island of lines.
