Mtwara Map Poster & Print
Mtwara lies on the southern coast of Tanzania, near the border with Mozambique, and its map begins with the sea. The town sits beside a sheltered bay, with a creek and mangrove shores on one side and the deep-water harbour on the other. The coastline is broken into inlets and sandbanks, giving the map an irregular edge.
The town itself is loosely spread. Wide roads laid out in the mid-twentieth century run between neighbourhoods with plenty of open space, and trees and gardens fill the gaps between buildings. The main road heads inland toward the rest of the region, and the airport occupies a large open area at the edge of town.
Mtwara's port was built after the Second World War to serve a large groundnut-growing scheme, and it has since found a new role as a base for offshore natural gas. A Mtwara map poster shows the bay, the harbour and the spacious town above them in a calm, open composition.

Deep-water port
The harbour on the bay was built in the mid-twentieth century and remains one of the main ports on Tanzania's southern coast.
Open street plan
Wide roads and scattered buildings give the town a loose, spacious layout, very different from the tight grids of older coastal towns.
