Nanping lies in the mountainous north of Fujian, and its central districts follow the rivers because the land around them is so steep. From above, the built area looks like narrow bands of streets squeezed between water and wooded slopes. Bridges cross the river at short intervals, stitching together neighbourhoods that the valleys would otherwise keep apart.
The Jianxi, Futunxi and Shaxi rivers join near Nanping, and from there the water continues toward Fuzhou and the sea as the Min River. This confluence gives the city its shape. Instead of a single centre, it has several arms reaching up separate valleys, with the ridges between them left as blank, unbuilt ground on the map.
The wider prefecture includes the Wuyi Mountains, known for their scenery and for the rock teas grown on their slopes.
