Winding roads then climb the slopes in curves and switchbacks. The newer city of Nof HaGalil spreads along the ridges above.
Nazareth is known as the childhood home of Jesus in Christian tradition, and it has long been a place of pilgrimage. The Basilica of the Annunciation, completed in 1969, is one of the largest churches in the Middle East. Mary's Well and the Church of St Gabriel lie to the north. Nazareth is also the largest Arab city in Israel.
