Nelson lies at the head of Tasman Bay, at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. On a map, the most striking feature is the Boulder Bank, a natural barrier of stones more than ten kilometres long. It encloses Nelson Haven and protects the port. The city spreads across the flat land by the water and climbs the hills behind it, and the Maitai River flows through the centre.
Nelson is one of New Zealand's oldest cities, and it is known for its sunny climate and its artists and craftspeople. Christ Church Cathedral stands on Church Hill, at the top of Trafalgar Street, the main axis of the centre. A hill east of town is marked as the Centre of New Zealand. The country's first recorded rugby match was played in Nelson in 1870.
