Pallichal lies in the countryside just outside Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, and its map looks nothing like a planned city. There is no grid. Roads follow the gentle rises and dips of the land, branching and rejoining. Houses spread along them in long, thin lines, with coconut groves and cultivated plots filling the gaps between.
Like much of southern Kerala, the area is laced with small streams, ponds and irrigation channels that feed paddy fields in the low ground. On a map these show up as fine, irregular lines and scattered small shapes. The built-up area thins and thickens as it moves across them, without a sharp edge anywhere.
