East Jiu river
The river runs the length of the town, and its winding course sets the direction for almost every street, giving the map a single strong axis from one side to the other.

Petrila Map Poster & Print
Petrila lies in the Jiu Valley in Hunedoara County, just east of Petroșani, where the East Jiu river runs through a narrow corridor in the Southern Carpathians. On a map the town is long and slender, its streets squeezed along the river and the road beside it, with neighbourhoods reaching a short way up the side valleys before the mountains take over.
For more than a century Petrila was a coal town. Its mine was one of the oldest in the Jiu Valley and worked until 2015, and the headframes and industrial buildings that remain have become a symbol of the valley's mining past. Like its neighbours, the town has since been looking for a new role, with the surrounding mountains drawing hikers.
A Petrila map poster shows how completely the valley shaped the town. The river and the main road run side by side through the frame, and almost everything else hangs from them in narrow strips. It is a spare, linear composition, with the dark line of the settlement drawn through a wide field of empty mountain.

Linear town plan
Hemmed in by the valley walls, Petrila stretches out in a thin band rather than a round cluster, with housing blocks and older houses lined up along the main road.
Side valleys
Short streets climb into small side valleys and end where the slopes steepen, giving the edges of the settlement a branching, comb-like outline against the empty mountainside.

Neden Petrila
Anlam taşıyan bir harita
Mining families have deep roots in Petrila, and many who left the Jiu Valley still think of it as home. A map of the town honours that working history without nostalgia, and its long, narrow shape is instantly recognisable to anyone from here.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a family name or the year someone started at the mine, and choose one of five styles; Noir suits the valley especially well. Buy the HD files for $9 or order a framed or unframed printed poster.
