Probolinggo lies on the northern coast of East Java, on the Madura Strait. From above, the town stretches along a straight shoreline, with a small harbour and fishponds at the water's edge. The main coastal road and railway run east to west through it. The land rises gradually southwards towards the Tengger highlands.
For many travellers, Probolinggo is the gateway to Mount Bromo. The road to the volcano's caldera begins here and climbs into the highlands. The town itself is known in the region for its mangoes and grapes. It has a long history as a port and market for the surrounding farmland, and its older centre still has streets from the colonial period.
