Risoul has two faces. The old village stands on the slopes above Guillestre and the Durance valley in the Hautes-Alpes. Risoul 1850, the ski station, was built much higher up in the forest near the tree line. On a map a winding road ties them together, its hairpin bends stacked one above another as it climbs the mountainside.
The ski area is linked with neighbouring Vars to form the Forêt Blanche domain, named after the larch and pine forests that cover much of the lower slopes. Many runs pass between the trees, which gives the resort a more sheltered character than the open, high-altitude stations further north.

Between them lies a wide band of forest crossed by the road, and below sits the flat, open floor of the Durance valley.
