Saint-Germain-en-Laye Map Poster & Print
Saint-Germain-en-Laye lies west of Paris on a plateau overlooking a loop of the Seine. From above, its layout is defined by three elements: the old town with its dense network of streets, the royal château at its edge, and the large Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye that stretches north and west, enclosed within a bend of the river.
The château was a royal residence for centuries and is the birthplace of Louis XIV. André Le Nôtre designed the Grande Terrasse, a straight promenade of more than two kilometres along the edge of the plateau, with views toward Paris. The château now houses the National Archaeology Museum, and the composer Claude Debussy was born in the town.
A Saint-Germain-en-Laye map poster is shaped by contrasts: the tight streets of the old town, the long straight line of the terrace, and the forest crossed by straight rides radiating from star-shaped junctions. With the Seine curving below, the result is one of the most elegant compositions in the Paris region.

Royal forest
North of the town the forest fills a wide loop of the Seine, crossed by straight hunting rides that meet at star-shaped junctions.
Old town and château
The château sits at the edge of a compact historic centre, whose dense, irregular streets contrast with the formal lines of the gardens and forest.
