Saint-Lô, the prefecture of the Manche department, grew on a rocky promontory above the River Vire. The old enclosure on the spur, still partly ringed by ramparts, is the natural focus of any map of the town. The river curves below it, and newer districts spread across the surrounding slopes and plateaus.
The town was almost entirely destroyed in the summer of 1944 during the Battle of Normandy and became known as the capital of the ruins. The phrase was later used by Samuel Beckett, who worked here with the Irish Red Cross hospital. Reconstruction in the following decades gave much of the centre a more regular post-war layout, visible on the map as wider, straighter streets.
A Saint-Lô map poster shows those layers together: the medieval outline of the spur, the Vire and its valley, the post-war blocks, and the roads leading out into the hedged countryside of the Manche. It is compact and strongly composed, and it stays easy to read even at small sizes.
